Seismic Hazard Model for Loss Estimation and Risk Management in Japan

Proceedings of the 6 th International Conference on Seismic Zonation, Nov. 12–15, 2000, Palm Springs, CA, Earthquake Engineering Research Institute, Oakland, CA

ABSTRACT

In order to provide risk managers and engineers with a model that they can use to estimate earthquake losses and manage earthquake risk for their Japanese properties, we have developed a seismic hazard model that integrates all available tectonic, seismicity and seismic hazard information nationwide. The seismotectonic part of the model incorporates earthquakes that are expected to occur on the Japan Trench (JT), Sagami Trough (ST), and Nankai-Suruga Trough (NST) subduction zones, intermediate-depth Wadati-Benioff seismicity zones, active crustal faults, and random background sources. In addition, conditional probability adjustments were made to the JT and NST subduction zones and to crustal faults where paleoseismic data are available to account for the elapsed time since the last major earthquake on these sources.
