The Southern California Wildfires of 2003
The multiple Southern California fires that raged from October 22 to November 6, 2003 burnt more than 660,000 acres, killed twenty-two people and destroyed more than 3,600 homes and almost 1,000 other structures. The high winds with gusts, some as high as 70 mph, sent flames in unexpected directions and carried fire-brands to areas that were thought to be safe.
