EQECAT India Cyclone Model

The following notes have been compiled from a number of EQECAT documents to provide a single document on the EQECAT India Cyclone model.

The northern Indian ocean has been the site for some of the world’s deadliest cyclones. Since 1737, there have been at least 5 cyclones that caused the deaths of more than 100,000 people ( Table 1). The deadliest cyclones have been in the Bay of Bengal region and the worst events have struck to the east of India into Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan).

Cyclones have affected most of the Indian coastline although the risk of tropical cyclone winds varies significantly along the coast.
