Hurricane Earl is a large storm with hurricane winds extending 90 miles outward from the center of the storm. Earl is now a category 3 hurricane and most models are in good agreement that Earl is not likely to intensify further.

A large earthquake occurred on Sunday, April 4, 2010 in Mexico just south of the California, US border (see figure). Nearly 1 million people were exposed to shaking of a very strong intensity, and the earthquake has been reported to be felt over a vast area of Mexico and the US, throughout southern California, and as far as Las Vegas, Nevada. Damage and loss, however, are expected to be focused in the epicentral region. |

Tropical Cyclone Ului is the first category 5 cyclone in the South Pacific basin this tropical storm season (2009-2010). According to the Earth Observatory, NASA, currently tropical cyclone Ului has maximum sustained winds of 55 knots (100 kilometers per hour) and gusts up to 70 knots (130 kilometers per hour). The cyclone was downgraded to a category 2 cyclone now, which is consistent with JTWC forecasts of diminishing storm strength and is moving southwest towards the Queensland coast. The presence of moderate vertical wind shear will impede storm strengthening and weaken Ului before landfall. |

Winds from European windstorm Xynthia over the 27-28 Feb weekend have caused significant damage and destruction across Europe, coming from Portugal through Spain and including France, Belgium, the UK, Germany and Denmark. Reports state that more than 50 people have died from this event, many from drowning. Peak wind measurements available so far note observed wind speeds of 175 km/hr (106 mph) atop the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. |

Early this morning a major earthquake occurred offshore of southern Chile. This magnitude 8.8 event has caused significant ground motions throughout central Chile and severely impacted the capital Santiago and the immediate coastal area of Valparaíso and Viña del Mar. Strong ground motions extend from Valparaíso in the North to Temuco in the south (see image) and extend to the inland valley areas including Santiago. This earthquake has occurred about 200 km north of the 1960 event, the largest event measured on the globe in the last 200 years, which is now estimated as a Magnitude 9.5 event. |
